How does network controller work in a computer?

The network card implements a complex electronic circuit using a layer of data link such as Ethernet to communicate. This allows communication between small groups of computers over a same Local Area Network or communications on a large scale through routed protocols like Internet Protocol (IP). There are four different ways to transfer data using a network card. They are Polling, Programming the I/O, Interrupt driven I/O and Direct Memory access.

A network card has a socket which usually is AUI, BNC or RJ-45 to connect a network cable with it.

The network controller of Gateway® DX4320 comes with a RJ-45 socket for connecting LAN or high speed broadband cable. It also has two LED’s to inform you whether the computer is connected to a network or not and if connected, then the data is transmitted or not. In a normal state when the computer is connected to a network, one LED should be continuously ON and the other should be blinking.
