Role of BIOS

Full form of BIOS is, Basic Input Output System. BIOS is one of the most important chips on your motherboard. It offers the most direct hardware control for your system. BIOS is an interface between hardware and software. BIOS activates when you turn on your computer, it will then test computer hardware, and ensure that your hardware is functioning properly before starting the process of loading the Operating System. If a capable Operating System is located, the BIOS turn control over to you.

Accessing BIOS

To access BIOS, you need to restart your computer. You will get an 'entering setup' message within a few seconds after turning on your computer. Depending upon the model, this message varies, including the key or keys that you need to press to enter BIOS. Quickly press the key or keys instructed by the previous message to get into BIOS.

Things to keep in mind

Sometimes you need to press BIOS access key several times to enter BIOS. But you need not hold the key down or press it too many times as there is chance that your system may get corrupt or locked. If that happens, you need to restart your system and try again. BIOS access is independent of any Operating System on your computer because the BIOS is a part of your motherboard hardware. It does not matter if your PC is running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Linux, UNIX, or no Operating System at all, any instructions for entering the BIOS setup utility will be the same.
