Gateway® SX2840-01-01 Series Memory Upgrade

What is computer memory? Why do you need to upgrade it on your Gateway® SX2840-01 desktop? What are the benefits of upgrading it?

The Gateway® SX2840-01 desktop series is a robust range of desktop PCs with rich multimedia features. With options of processors ranging from Intel® Core™ i3 to Intel® Core™ i7, hard disk space of up to 2TB, Blu-ray™ DVD drive, and memory that can be upgraded to 8GB max, there’s a lot on offer. Computer memory, more popularly known as random access memory (RAM), is the primary working memory on a computer and is used for the temporary storage of programs and data. In this, the data can be accessed directly and modified. It is measured in bytes, where 1 gigabyte (GB) = 1024 megabytes (MB).

Listed below are some questions about computer memory and how to manage it better :

  • When do you need more RAM?

  • What type of RAM do you need on your system?

  • How much RAM do you need and what are the benefits of upgrading it?

When do you need more RAM?

The most basic test for finding out that you are running low on memory is to check your Gateway® SX2840-01 PC’s performance. If it is running sluggishly and the programs and applications are taking too long to open up, it is time for you to increase the RAM. The ‘Task Manager’ can also tell you if your machine needs more RAM; just click on the ‘Performance’ tab. If the figure next to 'Available' (or 'Free' in Windows Vista®) under 'Physical Memory' hovers around zero and your PC seems sluggish, you need more RAM.

What type of RAM do you need on your system?

Computer memory comes in three different types - DDR, DDR2, and DDR3. Newer and advanced technologies offer faster performance, but most motherboards accept only one type of RAM. To find out the type of RAM on your Gateway® SX2840-01 system, check the manual. Also, some RAM vendors offer handy online tools for identifying the right RAM for many PCs and motherboards. However, it is crucial to select the right type of RAM, and if that requires some extra investment it is usually worthwhile, as it directly affects your system’s performance.

How much RAM do you need and what are the benefits of upgrading it?

There are no real restrictions to the amount of RAM you might need, provided your system can support it. For systems running Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, or Windows® XP, you will need the minimum recommended amount, but more is often better. If your basic activities on the Gateway® SX2840-01 PC revolves around surfing the Internet and writing letters, you would need 512MB to 1GB RAM. For RAM-intensive programs, such as games or photo editing software, or for working on multiple applications at the same time, you would require more than 1GB RAM. With a memory upgrade, applications respond more quickly, web pages load faster, and you can have more programs running simultaneously.
