Gateway® SX2840-01 Series Wireless DriversWhat are wireless drivers? Why are they needed for Gateway® SX2840-01 desktop series? What are the ways to update them?
To communicate and exchange data with each other, computers need to connect to a network or the Internet, and letting them connect to each other are hardware devices like network interface controllers (NICs). The network controller may be present inside the computer in the form of a network card, or it may be an embedded component of the motherboard, router, expansion card, printer interface, or USB device. NICs are available for both wireless and wired networks. A wireless driver is a software that helps operate and use the wireless network card of the computer and enables it to connect to a network wirelessly. Some of the popular manufacturers of wireless drivers are Intel® and D-Link®.
Listed below are ways to set-up and manage your wireless network and the wireless drivers on your Gateway® SX2840-01 desktop :

- Installing drivers for a wireless network controller
- Common problems with wireless networks, controllers, and drivers
Setting up a network using a network controller
To set up your own wireless network all you need is a wireless router, a broadband connection, and software or drivers to operate it. Most computers like Gateway® SX2840-01 desktops come with in-built wireless networking support. There are three different wireless networking technologies: 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. It is recommended to go for 802.11g, as it offers excellent performance and is compatible with almost everything.
Installing drivers for a wireless network controller
With all the hardware in place, to connect to the wireless network you need to install drivers that will help you operate the installed hardware. You can obtain the drivers for your wireless network from compact discs that come with the hardware. Otherwise, the Windows® XP, Windows Vista®, and Windows® 7 operating systems come with the requisite drivers. Alternatively, you can also download the drivers from the Internet on another computer by visiting the website of the particular vendor and then transfer the files to your Gateway® SX2840-01 desktop and start networking with other computers.
One of the common problems that you might face while using a wireless network is the wireless network controller not connecting to the network. The network adapter could get disabled, it may need to be reset, its wireless drivers might go missing, or it may need an update or a replacement as a whole. While most of these situations can be resolved by going to the ‘Network and Internet’ tab on the ‘Control Panel’ of your Gateway® SX2840-01 desktop, to replace the card you will need to buy a new one and install it again. To update the driver, you can go back to the vendor’s website and download the updated version. If you are not aware of the model of your wireless driver, you can always go to your system’s ‘Device Manager’ for details such as name and version.
