Then select the external hard drive that you have connected to the system and right click on the drive. Then select 'Properties' and click on 'Tools'. Click on 'Defragment' under 'Defragmentation' and click 'Ok' after the defragmentation.

To check the errors and bad sectors associated with external hard drives, open 'My Computer' and right click on the external hard drive, then select 'Properties'. Then select 'Tools' and click on 'Check Now' under 'Error Checking'. Select 'Automatically fix file system errors' and 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' check boxes which will automatically fix system errors.
