Resolve Hard Drive Error Messages

What are the errors related with a hard drive? What are the tips to resolve them?

Hard drive is one among the vital components that is included with the user computers. The hard disks are considered as the storage devices. Various types of hard disks are available (for example; SATA). The hard disks that are present upon the system should be formatted while installing the operating system. While formatting the hard disk, the user should select the particular file system upon which the hard drive should be partitioned. The partitions are created upon the disk for enabling categorized storage upon the systems. In certain occasions, the hard disk partitions or the hard disk as a whole causes some issues with the users. Apart from the issues caused due to the presence of any kind of infections like worms, viruses etc. the hard disk causes some other problems and is considered as hard disk errors. The sectors that are included within the drive become corrupted as the data handling increases. Such corruptions cause bad sectors and thereby cause file corruptions and also hard disk failures upon the system. The directories also get affected with the errors and thus the user finds difficulty in working upon the system. As a result the errors would display messages as dialog boxes or alert boxes while the user try to access data upon any partitions.

Discussed below are some ways to fix the errors:

  • Run error checking utility

  • Run chkdsk command

  • Tips to avoid errors

Run error checking utility

Open the explorer window and right click the hard disk partition that the user needs to check for errors. Choose the 'Properties' option and select 'Tools' tab inside the disk properties window. Now under the error checking section, click on 'Check now' option. Then a dialog box appears and the user can select the particular option for performing the error checking upon the hard disk. Scanning and automatic fix options are also there.

Run chkdsk command

The error checking utility for the hard disk can be performed from the command prompt also. For that, the user should open the command prompt window. Click on 'Start' menu and choose the 'Run' option. Inside the text box, type 'cmd' and press 'Open'. Type 'chkdsk' at the command prompt window and press 'Enter' key. The action will perform the disk checking in read only mode. Other commands for performing the disk checking are chkdsk volume:/f and chkdsk volume:/r.

Tips to avoid errors

The error checking utility will run upon the user computers automatically, if the hard disk is partitioned as NTFS file system. So the users need not want to check the errors until any error happened on the disk. The FAT32 file system should be checked for bad sectors once in a month. The file system existing on the user computer can be found out by right clicking and selecting the properties option from the local disk option.
