Laptop RAM

Get to know more about laptop RAM

RAM- Random Access Memory is the primary memory of the computer system that is used to load a user’s programs and data before they can process by the CPU. It is also referred to as the working memory, and it is an integral component of the computer system without which the machine will not be able to function. The contents within the memory are however, are temporary and are lost the moment the user reboots or shuts down the PC thus the need for the user to save to a secondary memory.

Role of RAM in laptops and the minimum RAM memory requirements for better laptop performance are discussed over here.

Roles of RAM in laptops

The primary memory holds temporary instructions, applications and data that are needed immediately by the CPU- computer hardware responsible for converting data to information. The processor can only be able to process a single data at any given time, to enable it to work first, it has to be able to switch between tasks i.e. it needs to have a location to store instructions it’s using and wants to use, store processed data, and store data waiting to be processed. The Switch between the tasks stored in the primary memory and the CPU happens so first that the user thinks that the laptop is multitasking while in actual case it is not. This translates to the laptop working faster with less time wasted in holding for the processor executes the entire task.

What are the minimum requirements for RAM in laptops?

The memory requirements are not standard for all laptops but are dictated by the software requirements i.e. the operating system software and the application software installed in the laptop. However, for basic performance the memory capacity should be pegged at a minimum of 256 MB. However, if the user wants the best performance the capacity should be increased to 1GB capacity. This is because when the operating system loads, a portion of the working memory is already used, as other start applications are run more portions of the memory is eaten up leaving only a substantial amount for data processing. With a memory of 256MB the user will experience a slight reduced performance as compared with a memory of 1GB.

Deciding on the RAM size

The user needs to take a note of all the hardware, data and application requirements that they will want the new laptop to handle. Different hardware and software have their own minimum memory requirements to be installed in the system. Once this is done the user will have an idea of how much memory capacity the system will need in order to perform optimally.
