Data Backup Problems in Windows® XP

What are the common backup problems in Windows® XP PC?

Windows® XP proved to be one of the most reliable operating systems, as it resolved most complaints about its predecessor, the Windows® 98. However, Windows® XP can also display some problems, and usually they appear while running backup and recovering data.

Here are some of the most common Windows® XP problems connected with recovering and backup process:

  • Incorrect data backup
  • Erasing the backup files
  • Incorrect data recovery

Incorrect data backup

The automated backup system usually creates a restore point every time a major change has been applied on your computer. Installing or uninstalling software, system registry changes or downloading some files could make the system to create this. However, if you will need to restore your computer to an earlier stage, you might find that the restore point is too old. If you want this problem solved, be sure your computer is running automated backups at least once a week. You can also create restore points by yourself, using backup from the Start Menu-Accessories-System Tools. This section is used for restoring or backup at the same time. You can run backups and restore only documents or you can choose all the files on the computer. Be sure to watch the space on the hard disk, as backup archives might be very big. Better find special backup software, as these kinds of programs also have some other advantages. One of them is that you can recover only the necessary files, without affecting the rest of your computer.

Erasing the backup files

Usually the system is saving the backup files in a specialized folder placed in the default Windows® Directory. Usually erasing this folder is very hard, but it might happen. There is no way you can recover your data afterwards, so be sure to prevent this. It is recommended to save your important files on external supports if you really want them protected. There is also a technique that recovers files using DOS, but this method is not recommended as it could affect the system stability.

Incorrect data recovery

One of the most common problems that could occur in Windows® XP is incorrect data recovery. Be sure to find the correct restore point before running the process. If you restore your computer to a wrong restore point, you might bring your computer to a time where the file was not even created and you will lose the correct restore point also. Be sure you identify the correct restore point or use software that can recover only your needed file.
