The Windows XP Professional offers additional features such as support for Windows Server domains and two physical processors, and it is targeted at power users, business and enterprise clients. There are certain malware or viruses which when infected in your system would not get deleted and it might affect all the Windows files as well as installed user programs, data etc. Then, the only way to get rid of these viruses is to reinstall the operating system in your system. Otherwise it might destruct hundreds or thousands of files in your system and even your hardware get damaged. You might not be able to solve these issues by repairing your Windows XP.

Following are the tips to perform a Windows XP repair installation:

  • Boot the computer

  • Start the Windows set-up

  • Things to be kept in mind

Boot the computer

First of all you need to boot the computer using the Windows XP CD. You might need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. When you see the "Welcome to set-up" screen, you might see certain options. This portion of the set-up program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer. To set-up Windows XP now, you need to press 'Enter'. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press 'R'. To quit set-up without installing Windows XP, press 'F3.'

Start the Windows set-up

You might press ‘Enter’ to start the Windows. After that select the ‘XP’ installation you want to repair from the list and press ‘R’ to start the repair. If ‘Repair’ is not one of the options, you might press ‘End’ set-up. Set-up might copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. You need not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Set-up might continue as if it was doing a clean install, but your applications and settings might remain intact.

Things to be kept in mind

The system repair function might remove any update you have previously installed that are not included on the CD. Drivers might also be reverted to their original XP versions, as well as some settings in network and performance settings might sometimes be reset to their defaults. Also it might be necessary to reactivate your Windows XP as well. When finished, you need to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update, since they are all replaced during repair.
