Firstly, insert Windows XP/2000 installation CD and allow to boot from CD. In the next prompt select the letter 'R' to enter the Windows Recovery Console. Select the partition where OS lies and press 'Enter' .In the command prompt type 'chkdsk /p' and then press 'Enter'. System would begin testing errors on drive. If there are errors chkdsk would repair that. Type chkdsk /r and press Enter. Chkdsk utility checks every sector on the hard drive for errors and repairs them. When system stops the scan, you have to type 'chkdsk /p' and press 'Enter'. After the scan, if there are no errors, you have successfully repaired the problem. Then exit the Recovery Console and remove the Windows XP CD.
