Stop the Message Download Windows® Search to Improve History

How to stop Internet Explorer® from prompting to download Windows® Search?

Many would have noticed the message “Download Windows Search to improve history and favorites results”. If you are using Internet Explorer® 8, you would be prompted with this message whenever you try to enter something in the address bar. This definitely will be annoying for frequent users of the address bar to access different websites. However there is no need for you to worry as you can get rid of this easily. There are manual as well as automatic means such as downloading the Fix It Solution. The following methods will help you stop the message “Download Windows Search to improve history and favorites results”:

  • Download and fix it
  • Change the registry settings to disable Prompt messages
  • Change the registry settings

Download and fix it

One of the easiest solutions is to download Windows® Search so that you are not prompted anymore. For users of Windows® 7, Windows Server® 2008 R2 and Windows Server® 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows® Search is already installed. Even then if you are receiving such a message, then you need to enable it. You can do it by taking the following steps. Click ‘Start,’ then ‘Control Panel’, ‘Programs’ and then ‘Turn Windows Features On or Off’. Search for Windows® Search and check it. This is not pre-installed in Windows Vista® or Windows® XP. You need to download and then install it.

Change the registry settings to disable Prompt messages

This solution is for those who do not have to download and have Windows® Search in their system. Click on the prompt once and leave it. In a week’s time, you will not be getting the message again. You need to frequently click on it. So an alternative is to change the registry settings. In the Run command box, type regedit and then press ’Enter’. Then typeHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMainWindows Search. Now create a REG_DWORD and name it as Show Prompt. Setting the value to zero means disabling the feature so set to 0 and then refresh Internet Explorer®.

Change the registry settings

You can change the Registry settings to make Internet Explorer® assume that the Windows® Search is installed and therefore it won’t prompt you to downloading it again. Run Registry and navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMainWindows Search. Now create a string value REG_SZ rather than Dword. Name it current version and give the value as 4.0. Refresh the Internet Explorer®. This is again the method for those who want to get rid of the message without installing Windows® Search.
